Gayane Avetisyan
Instructor of Enamel
Gayane was born in Armenia, a country with a rich tradition of the arts. It is in this environment within a broad range of cultural and historical legacies that she spent her formative years. She was fortunate to study as a child with well-known artists working and living in Armenia.
Outside of school, Gayane trained at the National Center for Fine Arts, specializing in painting, print making and pottery. By the time she graduated in 1994, she was teaching graphic arts and monotype at an innovative and experimental school launched in Armenia at the 5me of its independence.
Gayane has since continued her education in Armenia and abroad. She attended the Liberal Arts College in Yerevan with a focus on Art History and Philosophy. In 1999 she was awarded an Aschberg Scholarship for visual artists from the Austrian Federal Chancellery which permitted her to attend an artist in residence program in Vienna and hold her first solo exhibit at the Jütner Gallery.
In 2010, she moved to the country of Georgia where she was fortunate to discover and study cloisonné enameling with local masters. Since then she has followed her passion for this technique by attending specialized workshops throughout the United States. She has been trained by enamel artists including Linda Dart and Merry-Lee Rae.
Starting in 2012, Gayane spent four years living in Haiti where a vibrant culture inspired her to embrace more ethnicity, light and character into her works. She was also able to return to one of her passions; teaching. She taught cloisonné and alternative enameling techniques and pottery to Haitians and the diverse expatriate community.
Throughout her career she has participated in group exhibitions and as a solo artist in the United States and Europe. She has exhibited ceramics, monotypes, oil paintings and conceptual installation works.
Gayane currently lives and creates in Montreal. She was enrolled in the continuing education program at Ecole de Joaillerie in Montreal where she learned traditional and contemporary art jewelry techniques.
